"I'm Yorkshire terriers and leather sofas..."
The sideways caustic punk jag, angular and extremely funky, on "VHS", by Bristol 5 piece Saloon Dion. is so incredibly bombastic and sooo seriously cool (an amalgam of later Beatles, the Talking Heads, Roxy Music, Bloc Party and Frankie Goes To Hollywood) that everything else is a big fat cherry on top. Or Cherries, more to the point and those cherries come in the form of Taryn McDonnell's polished vocal aesthetic (that somehow sounds upper crust and no crust at the same time) and the spicy acerbic lyrics that are keenly focused and funny, while making a statement about those, well, humanly challenged poseurs among us.
"VHS" out on Disobedient Records is the follow-up to their debut "Deal Or No Deal", which primed the pump (and then some) when it was released earlier this year by Permanent Creeps.
McDonnell (guitar / vocals) says of the song: “Lyrically, it was inspired by a scene in ‘Better Call Saul’ where Kim [Saul’s girlfriend] is flicking through a swanky spa/hotel brochure, raises her eyebrows and says something like, ‘You know what, Saul? I am luxurious yet casual’. The quote seemed like a fitting symbol for the absurdity of advertising and the methods used by a company to sell their product as an extension of ‘you’. The rest of the lyrics are the monologue of a character who is essentially a representation of all these corporations, their advertising methods and capitalism itself.”

Digging this so much.

Bristol five-piece Saloon Dion release their second single ‘VHS’ via Disobedient Records on August 6th. It’s the follow-up to their debut ‘Deal Or No Deal’, which opened all the right boxes when it was released earlier this year by Permanent Creeps.
Their unique blend of post-punk and ’80s synth rock can be likened to The Stranglers or Talking Heads, but they draw influences from across the board, from Gang of Four and the Beastie Boys to Parquet Courts and Squid. Their satirical lyrics sit atop a backing that is simultaneously heavy and funky, with songs formed around driving synth and bass hooks, with flurries of intricate guitar and multi-vocalist mash ups, and ‘VHS’ lopes along in a suitably playful but slightly menacing manner.

Saloon Dion are Taryn McDonnell (guitar / vocals), Tom Simpkins (guitar / vocals), David Sturgess (synth / vocals), Luke Mullins (bass) and Ben Molyneux (drums). They formed in late 2020 after numerous late-night chats out and about in Bristol. Prior to the pandemic shutting everything down, they were all members of some of the city’s most loved underground acts (Kimbo Nice, Ratbags and Football FC) but found themselves in the same position of wanting to start something new.
Since the return of live shows in June, they have been released into the wild and two London shows with Lumer and Feet (for Hard of Hearing and So Young respectively) set the tone for what’s to come, with energetic live performances built for rooms that are full to the rafters with drunk attendees. For now, they managed to get the socially distanced heads bopping, but they’ve started strong, and they’ve started just how they mean to go on.
