"You’re so selfish / I’m not allowed to be mad, but you are? / Do you actually love me?"
"BPD" by transplanted Tucson punks Foxx Bodies (now living in Los Angeles) feels like a smart, funny, self-deprecating, confusing, incredibly honest, sideways, politico punk song that ambles and sways like something between burlesque / art rock / baroque pop reflected in a carnival mirror. As the music, stark, with exquisitely jangly stabs of sound swing and punch, Bella Vanek's vocal performance / art performance feels so incredibly raw and wildly theatrical. It is beyond punk, stretching into spoken word and straight on acting really. Amazing, unforgettable and brutally honest.
“BPD is short for borderline personality disorder which is one of my multiple mental health diagnoses. Each instrument is used to match the lyrics as they go from a predictable ‘neurotypical’ stream of consciousness to repeated self-hating phrases to loss of words or ability to function. This song was originally written for cathartic purposes, but it was recorded in hopes that borderline can be seen in a more sympathetic light. Many of the symptoms of BPD stem from low self-esteem, fear of abandonment, depression, anxiety, or abuse rather than the popular narrative of inherent intolerance or neuroticism.” - Bella Vanek
