"I was a squid swimming through darkness..."
"I Was a Moth" by Swedish American singer-songwriter and animator Grimson is as full of absolute tension and heavy sadness as it is beauty and pathos. While it feels stripped down, the emotional push and pulled by acoustic guitar lines and an evocative vocal aesthetic crooning poetic lyrics laced with melancholia and charm at the same time, "I was a mailbox, swallowing post-cards, sending my regards, to Hollywood stars..." reminds me that the essence of sonic art always hinges on the artists voice and words. Now don't get me wrong, the orchestration that floods over the narration is incredibly impactful and I am glad that it is not too heavy handed but just right in balancing the weight of loss carried in the sound of the strings.
Grimson opens up about the track:
"I Was a Moth is an unreleased song from my teenage years, reimagined at age 23 with a six-part string arrangement. Despite focusing on the narrator's proclamations, it is the most abstract lyrical story I've ever told. It tells the story of a big change that came and went, leaving a sharp divide between the past and the future, and the melancholy associated looking backwards to a simpler, more confident time. But still, the iterations that the protagonist has experienced are all quite dour in of themselves, which begs the question, why is the protagonist looking backwards with such nostalgia if he was so unhappy?"
So often, artists are artists in different mediums. Something I envy. This artist grew up in New York and now expands this project, Grimson, as an ongoing music / film thing while working in a hotel in Berlin. Grimson animated the Official Video for "I Was a Moth" as well. Amazing.
