"you never get off that easy without that bullshit coming out of your mouth..."
"Featherdusta" by Morgantown, West Virginia based Clean Dirty Clean is so beautifully raw and bad ass that if feels like it is forged from the unbridled and potent, incredibly fertile proto punk / power pop petri dish period of 1978 to around 1983 (at least to me). In fact, there exists a little known movie from 1980 called "Up The Academy" with a great indie soundtrack featuring the likes of Ian Hunter, Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers, The Babys, Blow Up, Pat Benatar and more and "Featherdusta" sounds like it could be on that soundtrack in between "Coquette" by the Cheeks and "X Offender" by Blondie.
It might very well be Wes Thomas' power pop / glam lead work or James Rector's punchy, ever shifting drums, Andrew Matheny's double time wall to wall bass booms or vocalist /guitarist's / songwriter Neal Humphries rock forward melodies over churning guitar rhythms. It might be all those things and other things that are less easy to define but the track blends basic and complex iconic rock sounds that are so fucking catchy, nostalgic and fun. The song, "about the dichotomies that often strain personal relationships - intimacy vs detachment, understanding vs confusion, sincerity vs disingenuousness, reverence vs ridicule", feels indie rock classic.
"Featherdusta" is from Clean Dirty Clean's latest EP "Fade In".
