"we fall in love without a reason..."
Hawthorne, California based Ian the Idiot crafts indie pop songs that feel earnest and classic without succumbing to the modern indie tropes of the day. Listen to "James Dean" with the sparkly keys, jubilant rhythms, punchy bass line, free form drums and Ian's tender croons bolstered by backing harmonies and it could of been made in the late 70's. There is even an amazing jazzy sax solo that for some reason made me flash on the Phil Kenzie's incredible work on Al Stewart's "Year of the Cat" (1976). By creating a pure sound not beholden to those aforementioned pop indie tropes he has crafted something timeless and real sounding.
Ian shares:
"This is my attempt at making a simple-yet-complicated pop song produced in the old FM Radio style. Lyrically, it’s a poetic parallel conversation between the idea of being young and beautiful in post-war America with the idea of being young, pregnant, and working class in the 21st century."
and
"I performed drums, bass, guitars and vocals. I recorded this in the garage with Michael Stevenson of the bands Small Forward and Blue Wilson, who also played keys and electric guitar. At the end, we brought in my buddy Richard Feder to lay down a sweet saxophone solo at the end. Mastered by Timothy Stollenwerk at Stereophonic Mastering."
Love the wistful tones, the pearly keyboard reflections, the chorus that is full of romance. Oh, and if ever performed live, the audience would go crazy for.

Hello! My name is Ian. I'm a Los Angeles born-and-raised independent artist. I've been writing and recording songs DIY for over 15 years, starting as a kid in my dad's garage. While studying literature, I played in a number of bands around the city's "indie circuit," including the bands Pkwy, Small Forward, and Yucky Bangs. I currently live in Hawthorne, CA (hometown of my favorite band of all time, The Beach Boys) with my wife and two kids. I quietly get by as a graphic designer in some corporation. Life is challenging, everyone's is. But I'm very fortunate all around. I am trying to make music that makes people feel good, both about themselves and about the world. I want to be a warm light to those who are insecure.
