"christmas spirit in the cake, a feeling that we can't bake..."
Maria Rabbit is a bit of a mystery, a musical entity that might or might not be a band or any number of people. It really doesn't matter. What matters is that the track "witch tree" is oddly captivating. A lo-fi psychedelic dreamy bedroom pop affair that on one hand has lo-fi elements (like a maybe over-modulated lead vocal) but is so elegantly drawn. At the core is a simple ukulele progression with an a vocal aesthetic balanced between intimate harsh tones crooning truly interesting sideways lyrics. That is wonderful enough but the magic happens when orchestral shapes flow in (in a big gorgeous way) and bits of odd ambient sounds and ethereal other vocals rise up as drums fall in so perfectly. Speaking of the drums, it is as if the spirit of Ringo Starr himself was conjured up, the drums serve the song so well. Beautiful, eerie and oddly so, so perfect.
Who are you Maria Rabbit? Whoever he, she or they are, he, she or they shared this:
