"I'm wasted, drug abuser..."
"Drunken Sailor" from Long Island's Pin Cushion does feel drunk, and bombastically diverse and heavy as f*ck. The first half feels like metal burlesque, like if 1930's Cab Calloway's band at Harlem's Cotton Club played heavy metal guitars (jazz hollow bodies of course). Pin Cushion bumps and grinds and also interjects a kind of 60's Doors psychedelia (on speed). Amazingly raw and tight fisted, the guitar / bass / drums dance is not only tightly wound but symbiotic while the vox are muscular and ballsy. At the half way point the song blasts off into a mosh pit punk furious sort of post hardcore (blissfully) head baning mess and then surprisingly, and I do mean 'surprisingly', draws down into a turn the lights down low, R&B indie soul pop affair. It is as if Metal Black Flag metamorphosed into Chicano Batman, oh, and don't worry they gleefully fall back into the dark abyss.
"Drunken Sailor" is the first track off of Pin Cushion's eponymous first full length album produced by Jalipaz Nelson at audioconfusion in Mesa, AZ. (AJJ, Oakily Dokily, ect. ). The band is comprised of Joe Savarese (bass), Cody Phillips (vox, drums, xylophone) and Dan Onorato (vox, guitar, keyboard).

Pin Cushion is a band from Long Island that makes music. Whenever they get together, they plug their instruments in and boy howdy does music come out. They mainly draw influence from other musicians and various other noises. In 2019, a notable publication put them among the likes of other bands in existence during 2019. They play notes, and sing notes, and bang drums, sometimes all at once. When listening to Pin Cushion, one is transported to other times when music was being played. Just give them a listen and you’ll say, “Oh man, music.” Their most recent single, “Booya”, is a prime example of music.
