"who's your therapist, hire your therapist..."
Emei's texting informed track "Better People to Leave on Read" is exquisitely relatable and Emei's vocal aesthetic perfectly drenched in empowered snarling 'pissed offness' and wagging her finger is so relatable. The smashed beat at this sort of camped up cadence like stalking about your apartment and the jazz pop piano downbeats feels so classic and composed, somehow elegant and not indie tropey but it's own thing that feels divinely artfully cabaret. I love Emei's self aware, powerful voice and the chorale of voices like an army of herself lending support. Emei says that the track "was written in a fit of rage when an ex-best friend (who made moves on my boyfriend) texted saying she was proud of my success". Don't you just love passive aggressive people? Hey, I grew up so long ago that my youth was free of smart phones. Life seemed more simple back then especially if you didn't bother to have a phone answering machine. Fuck yeah, people actually had a bulky machine on their kitchen counter back in the day.
We get by with a little help from our friends"who's your therapist.... hire your therapist" indeed.
