"she's the one that we will always believe..."
There is a padded cell madness in play in the rolling politico power of "Revisionists" by Slow Down Molasses based out of Saskatoon, Sask, Canada. The burning, ramping up eruptions of sound built on jagged stacked sticks of pushing base lines, sideways guitars with bulging dissonance while drums keep it all anchored down (or not). The funny thing is that the math rock-ian sections that have some framework for the potent vocal rants chip away at the corners until the middle section feels so very out of control. Somehow some slight conventions fall back into place feeling like an almost Henry Mancini-esque orchestrated spy caper at times and at other times like Pere Ubu doing grunge. And then everything feels like it turns upside down and then right side up with more spy caper Peter Gunn-esque turns before ending. It feels inside out, maybe a representation of gaslighting, grooming or other types of toxicity.
“Revisionists is the most overtly sloganeering (or political) song on the album (i.e. She’s the one that I will always believe) but like much of the rest of the songs on the album’s attempts at personal reflection, we couldn’t help but include a personal call out with the title. Men are over-represented in music and men too easily avoid the consequences of their actions. Despite our best attempts, I know we could always be better allies and be more active in making space for women in music and contributing to safer spaces. Despite the fact that I love to death the current (all male) line up of this band, I do miss the days when multiple amazing women were part of it. We were all better off for it.
So, believe women, book women for your festivals and stop playing on bills that consist only of men. Just do it. It’s the right thing to do.” - Tyson McShane
"Revisionists" is from SDM's album "Minor Deaths". The band will be touring in Germany and the UK in April/May.

Confronting bristling anxious energy with highly-pronounced pop edges, Slow Down Molasses of Saskatoon, Sask. Canada has never been shy about traversing shifting sonic territories. In their latest iteration, the four-piece plunge deep into delay trails and feedback decay with a sound steeped in existential dread and simmering guitar rock post-punk sunshine.
While their 2016 album, 100% Sunshine, forged new sounds within a group already known for constant evolution, it also saw the band develop an increasingly euphoric live performance, which saw them playing on stages worldwide. Retreating to their Saskatoon studio, ruminating on the sonic afterburn left in their wake, Slow Down Molasses are ready to emerge with a new LP - easily their most concise and devastating work yet.
Slated for an October 2021 release, Minor Deaths is a suite of eight songs that make controlled swerves into melodic indie rock landscapes while paying homage to the tightly-wound nervousness of post-punk unease.
Having shared the stage with like-minded groups such as Deerhoof, Animal Collective, Swervedriver and Built to Spill, Slow Down Molasses are once again gearing up to take their explosive live show to audiences worldwide. Expect to see performances coinciding with festivals across Canada, the United Kingdom and Europe throughout 2021 and 2022.
