"When I get out of this house, I will be my own, I will hold my leash, I will walk myself home..."
Grimson, the wildly creative 24 year old Swedish / American singer-songwriter and animator who grew up in New York and now works and lives in Berlin seems to always dazzle me with his sonic and visual imagery. The latest Grimson creation "Household" bristles with whimsy and a blend of broad 70's psyche pop, 90's baroque pop (and post rock), current indie rock that may or may not be informed by late 60's Brit pop (more than once you feel sonic illusions to the Beatles and ELO and even a sparse section that bounces like the middle shift of "A Day in the Life") and darkly drawn emo-art pop.
Grimson shares that "Household' is "an imagined desperate teenage domestic jailbreak" and the accompanying Official Video that skips with a collision of cut and paste-esque sort of Terry Gilliam animation and with what feels like photo techniques and straight animation that draws the song into even more dark (even creepy) places was directed and animated by T. Marsh and Grimson himself.
Grimson shares:
"The song was inspired by two of my close female friends who were heavily constrained and controlled by their domineering parents. The opening line "When I get out of this house, I will be my own," refers to the captivity I witnessed. I try to give my friends a fighting chance in the final chorus of this imagined escape, singing "I can't take my eyes off the horizon, 'cause I will be the first one off this island." Sadly they don't really succeed."
And:
"While this track was originally arranged for my college psych-rock band, I reworked it in an attempt to deliver a clearer, more intimate view of Grimson's personal and aesthetic direction. And I'm very proud of my string arrangement."
There also seem to be some of Grimson's personal familial sides of this song beneath the surface which maybe should be left for another day. I hope to chat with him on a future podcast. In any event, Grimson has tenderly stunned me once again.
