“Paying the price / Shame it feels so nice..."
From their EP "Human and Kind", released 25 March 2022 on Ninja Tune, the slippery, sideways groove of "Paying The Price" by London based collective Folly Group is less than a love letter to the city they live in. The rattling drum beat, jumbling bass line, hangover guitar line, jangly keys and snarky biting vox feel darkly captivating like the tube station at midnight. Folly Group have exorcised a sound from late 70's proto punk ghosts and secret UK or German underground disco clubs before the 5 letter "D" word was even invented. It is dreadfully funky with an air of surreal post punk gangster-ism. I dig it so much.
It is as much a social commentary than a song. From Press notes: The band’s Sean Harper had this to say about the new single: “‘Paying The Price’ loosely documents commuting. Louis wrote the title/hook (“Paying the price / Shame it feels so nice”) and to me it summarizes the questions so many London residents have for themselves: “This place is toxic, awful people are everywhere, literally everything feels like a competition, the endless demands the cost of living in this city imposes upon me are making me a more stressed out, confused, paranoid, depressed person. Why do I love it here?”
I know the feeling Sean. I know the feeling.

London based collective Folly Group have cultivated a loyal underground following since their early 2020 debut work ‘Butt No Rifle’ surfaced online in January - live streaming from lockdown for the likes of Quarantunes while relentlessly writing and recording further new material for release later this year. Folly Group also feature on the new Live at The Windmill compilation alongside Kate Tempest, black midi, Shame, PVA & more. Their music combines driving rhythm and sharp guitars and turns them up full-pelt with hi-fi electronics and barked vocals.
