I am digging the punk rustic, lo-fi jangle of "D S T" by Nevada City's Them Hills, the musical outfit comprised of Dan Elkan (Broken Bells, Hella, Kim Deal) and Thaddeus Stoenner. Love the aesthetic, 2 talented guys and drum machine beats. Them Hills was somehow born after Elkan played with Broken Bells as a touring member, as well as playing live with James Mercer (The Shins) and Danger Mouse for a year and then took a break. As a singer and songwriter Elkan decompressed with Stoenner capturing lo-fi motifs and Them Hills was born.
Of "D S T" Elkan shares:
"I’ve always been fascinated with Daylight Savings Time and how arbitrary it feels. Some countries do it while others don’t, some countries used to do it and some have never even considered it. While the majority of US states are in, there’s still a couple that are out. Even the days that we designate to set the clocks changes.
I like to think of it as a form of time travel. We literally lose an hour?! That time was erased?! Isn’t that what happened when Einstein became the world’s first time traveler?! (Doc Brown’s dog, not the scientist)
I just find it odd that we are so tied to time… until we aren’t. We just pick a day and nonchalantly reach over to the clock and set it differently.
The extra hour of evening light though…"

"D S T" offers exquisite sort of jangle pop / post punk guitar slides, lush bass lines and drops into deep pool psychedelia. It makes me smile and drift away. It has complexities within the sort of rich busker punk campfire song it pretends to be. "What time anyway?" is right.

Nevada City's Them Hills, made up of Dan Elkan (Broken Bells, Hella, Kim Deal) and Thaddeus Stoenner. Inspired by spending the better part of a year as a touring member of Broken Bells playing live with James Mercer (The Shins) and Danger Mouse, singer / songwriter Dan Elkan went into a practice space with Thaddeus Stoenner to capture ideas.
They penned an unforgettable album full of sincerity and lo-fi textures - moody and catchy with beautifully fuzzy guitar riffs, unique drum machine beats and dreamy vocals.
