"I'm exactly what you thought / A monster but i wanna get caught / I hang around in dark spots..."
Sarabean's crushing "Belonged" has a lot of emotional complexities. At first the bell like keys feel very whimsical like a fantasy story about to unfold but seconds in Sarabean's beautifully somber vocal aesthetic splashes your face with cold water, "I don't know if I'll live till 18 I'm struggling / More and more I'm so sorry / I can't handle bad things and what you think of me / I care way too much". They are hard words to absorb and a reminder to me who is a parent and who has always felt things in hard ways (ever since I was small) that having an empathetic heart, being an empath, so to speak can put you in a dark sad spiral if you are not careful.
As the song moves along on those percolating sounds and counterpoised musical melodies in an orchestrated way, with Sarabean's vocals utterly up front, layered with self harmonies. The song's sheer beauty offsets some of the sadness. It feels like a self aware look in the mirror and as musical passages play between her words there is a sense however small that things are going to be ok. The song plays like a commiserate hug, like a recognition of those who feel as you do, "I'm exactly what you thought / A monster but i wanna get caught / I hang around in dark spots / Cuz i never really belonged."
"Belonged" is the last track of Sarabean's 2022 album "Please Don't Let Me Be".
