"something I said, made you feel different / I wouldn't take it back even if I could..."
It is hard, hard to cut through the haze, that dense haze of sameness of indie rock bands. It might of felt easier to do back in the day (that undefinable time we all set depending on our age and circumstance) when maybe people had to try harder to find those shiny gems of music. Nashville based Secondhand Sound cut through with artistic choices that at every turn feel laced, even drenching with passion. On their first single called "Colm's Conquest" (from their 3rd EP due to release this summer) those difference come in right away on the second chord choice on the verse. It goes to an unexpected place, one that 98% of bands wouldn't go. It screams at you, pulls you in. The double time nature of the rhythm, the absolutely potent bass and solid in the pocket drumming (David Lovering came to mind) and maybe especially the utterly compelling vocal aesthetic of lead singer / guitarist Sawyer J. Estok.
Of the track he shares:
“What’s interesting about this song is that it’s a rare example of a Secondhand Sound song that didn’t originate on my acoustic guitar. Usually, I sit and pine over a song, specifically lyrics, for months. This one came really fast and that was refreshing.”
I really dig his vocal countenance, character. Not only a great singer, he wears his emotions on his melodies but it is always dressed up in his vocal artistry. It is hard to explain but he pushes the emotions right up to the edge and then steps one foot over. In this way his approach feels art rock-ish and Secondhand Sound does step into the glitter side of indie rock a bit. Their blendo approach, alt rock infused with bits of lounge punk, jangle pop, indie rock does feel sort of rolled in heartland rock too. I feel the slick pants of 80's new wave / power pop blended with the flannel shirts of 90's college indie rock radio and that is so fucking awesome.
