"I must be on my way, it's time to fly..."
"Remember Me When It's Raining" by Louisville, Kentucky-based quartet Phourist & the Photons, and from their current full length "My Many Mortal Forms" gets right into the drama. From the onset there is a sense of red velvet curtains opening and stage foot lights revealing a story. Piano strains at the core, emotional vox with Nick (Hill) Phourist as the auteur, provocateur, guide. When the big downbeats, the swelling bass guitar tones, explosive divergent drumming and lead guitar accompaniment (that sometimes mirrors those wonderful guitar notes) there is a sense of artistic grandeur. The atmosphere feels (to me ) somewhat anchored of 70's post rock and beyond, classical rock blending with tentacles of progressive musical moves. The sound feels cross generational and as I poked and prodded, perused the album I somehow thought of artists as diverse as Elton John, Radiohead and Native Window all in the same breath.
As I often do, I scoured YouTube for live performances and Phourist & the Photons (Nick Hill - vocals, piano, guitar, fx / Jailynn Lake Noel - bass / Andrew Critchelow - guitar, synthesis and Scott Boice - drums, fx) are the real deal. Great musicianship all around. Great live band.
Sit back when you have time to yourself and dip into their sounds that feel honed from earnest places and fused together with artistic intentions free from the current indie tropes of the day.

They are known for its non-linear songcraft which includes winding musical passages, and adventurous arrangements flanking undeniable pop-rock hooks.
