"you and I we could drink coffee we'll discuss all the movies that we'll copy..."
The forlorn shit kicker melancholia of SOSOS by Texas bred, Boston based Texas Critter, the latest solo incarnation of singer-songwriter Evan Taylor (who also his talented tentacles in Frogger, Proxy War and Last Violets with Vincent Paz) is, well, goddamn beautiful. The sparse arrangement, the somber sway, wallowing bass tones, sparkling lead guitar adorations, the sort of organic beat and. most especially, Evan's gorgeously sad, even depressive vocal countenance cuts right through your flesh, rib cage and directly into your heart.
There is a lot of wonderful poetic lyricism drenched in self deprecation that feels so highly self reflective, "maybe I'm in deep space, maybe I'm at the bottom of a brief case, either way I'm darkness, I’m not your light, I’m just your harness… maybe I'm just paper, a list of all the reasons he has not to hate her”. Wow, the depth of perspective feels so incredibly candid whether based on real things, events or fiction analogous to emotions we all might feel. Evan let's his sad stories steep as the song moves along creating a bitter tea that you want to swallow.
Of the song, Evan shares:
"SOSOS (silt or sand or shade) is about the anxiety one feels in a loving relationship when the only love that’s modeled for them is a broken one— and how that broken love can twist one’s perception of their role in a relationship. Sometimes we don’t feel good enough for the love we have— like we were planted in the wrong soil— how could a flower grow in concrete, in silt or sand or shade or rot? but in the end— they do. and love can come from all sorts of dark places."
In the end (or beginning) Texas Critter crafts a what feels like southern somber core, a sort of warm place to feel sad and I did think of Elliot Smith (RIP) and Sparklehorse (RIP), not aesthetically but in temperament.
Lovely stuff- really dig the words and music and, just everything.
