"Trouble / That cannot be named / White eyes / By your daisy chains..."
It's ok to get to the point when your music is your career, that is wonderful but I feel that, oftentimes, the best pieces of sonic art are made when you are doing other things, when life does not revolve utterly around your music. I think that is the reason that some early works by iconic artists are their best works because the song are constructed out of the living of live over years either on the road while side hustles, conventional jobs or going to school is part of the equation. This way those inherent struggles, joys of survival of going through the paces of making a living or doing what is expected seeps into your art.
"Glass Eyes" is a mere sliver of the debut "Mocean" EP by Springfield, Ohio bred, Nashville based Belmont University student Jack Landess. With it's dashes of ethereal cast imagery, with it's slightly shoegaze haze and easy going emotional thrust it will likely push at least 78% of you into a heady daydream, so much so that your mom or significant other might have to say your name 3 times before you hear it.
It is, for me, a lovely way to start off the morning. I am digging the percolating sounds, the dominant bass and urgent beat, the sparkling keys and sense of calm and angst stirred up like a bittersweet drink. The lounge punk breaks are dreamy cool and the sense of hopeful choices dangle like that brass ring. I feel an amalgam of Porches and The Drums.
Maybe we are all just killing time.
