"What does remain, when love is gone / When there’s the pain of being alone / Glimmering eye, speaking goodbye / Moments that I lean on and cry..."
"What Remains", the title track from Victoria, BC based indie folk duo Ocie Elliott's upcoming EP (dropping September 23rd, 2022) is born from the feelings of love lost and how somber truths change and shape you. Like a lot of Jon Middleton's and Sierra Lundy's harmonious creations, the sonic setting here is simple and quite sparse and the music serves as a textured framework for a story, one that is often, on one hand. aloof / serious in repose but on the other hands eloquently sad and beautiful. This ability to translate the key elemental emotions of life (between birth and death) and move us within their songs reflection is a wonderful thing.
The existence of "What Remains" came out of nowhere or maybe from places unknown as press notey stuff explain:
[The melody and music for this song came whilst drifting off before one of the band's first and only shows of 2021. They had just checked in to a hotel (something they hadn’t done, for a gig at least, in well over a year) and had time for a quick rest before heading to the venue. For whatever reason, right before a short sleep came, the song which is now ‘What Remains’ appeared in Jon’s head. It’s a song about losing someone you deeply love and the feelings of trying to get through and live with the sadness and emotion that loss brings to life.]
Like the best authors, Ocie Elliott is able to translate stories that are real or fictional, or exist somewhere in between, and inhabit them. Like a sonic stage play in an intimate space where we can feel the words right in our ears, it might touch us as if they are friends and we are their shoulders to cry on.

Victoria, B.C. duo Ocie Elliott – Jon Middleton and Sierra Lundy – dream up dusty folk painted in broad strokes of acoustic instrumentation and lyrical eloquence meant for nights under the stars, long drives with no destination, and quiet moments of reprieve. After racking up over 15 million combined streams and receiving acclaim from American Songwriter, Atwood Magazine, PopSugar, and more, the pair cement this balance on their new EP, Slow Tide [Nettwerk], out March 12, 2021.
Ocie Elliott came to life in 2017 on EP. In between sharing stages with everyone from Mason Jennings and Sons Of The East to Kim Churchill and Joshua Hyslop, they launched a series of covers on YouTube shot in the backseat of their Honda CRV, performing intimate renditions of Elliott Smith, Gillian Welch, John Prine, and Simon & Garfunkel, to name a few. On the heels of 2019’s We Fall In, the single “Run To You” appeared in a slew of television shows, including Grey’s Anatomy, Batwoman, Legacies and more.
2020 proved to be their most prolific year yet kickstarted by the In That Room EP, and following it up with the critically acclaimed Tracks EP. At the top of the summer and in the midst of the Global Pandemic, Sierra and Jon retreated to an oceanside bungalow in Ladysmith on Vancouver Island for three days. The peace around them melted into their songwriting.
By achieving balance together on Slow Tide, Ocie Elliott might just help listeners do the same.
