"light up the longest day, the morning never came..."
Sometimes I like when artists define their own sound, their own genre. Seattle's Peyote Ugly define their art as Ectodelic synth-psyche which has a counter-poised thing happening in my unsophisticated brain, 'ecto' meaning external and psyche suggesting the human soul, deeply internal. Maybe it is a way to have both sides of the equation and the best art is, after all. I had to smile to because as a take on psych rock, I have, in the past referred to a band as psyche rock.
Stepping into "Ultraviolet", from their upcoming album "Double Vision" (another reference to duality) dropping September does feel both organic and synthetic propelled by exquisite bass and guitar lines and purposeful lo-fi synths tones which I love. I prefer synths to not sound like natural instruments. The track also features Brennan Moring's passionate vox that feel both internal but wailing to the masses (as in anthemic). There is a pushed dreaminess, a nod to 90's indie rock and 80's new wave. The poetic tension of the lyrics paint pictures in your mind. The song is a movie that you want to see or at least makes you want to see the song's back story.
Cool or cool beans, whichever you prefer.

"Sparkling riffs wind through a kaleidoscope of extrasolar sounds — the stuff of aquatic-dreams that invites and lulls anyone within earshot into a host of distant worlds. Peyote Ugly is a band that envelops you and fully invites you in.
Peyote Ugly have been bathing audiences in their self described ectodelic-psych rock since 2015, when the idea for creating a psychedelic band struck members Elliot Preston (Blade Palace) and Brennan Moring (Sealife) soon after meeting via a mutual friend that would become their first drummer. When their former drummer moved to Mexico in 2020, the band expanded to include Nate Louis (Blade Palace) on drums and Sebastian Brown Glad (Forest Ray) on bass — the sound is built on the synergy in songwriting between Brennan and Elliot: a foundation grounded in Elliot's driving pedal-laden guitar riffs and melodic leads that meld with Brennan's ethereal vocals, complex songwriting structures, and psychedelic synth-work. This new line up ensures a renewed energy for the band both live and in the studio, and as Elliot states: 'the new songs feel more like Peyote Ugly than ever before.'
Following the success of their self-titled EP in (2017), Peyote Ugly quickly delivered the introspective sophomore EP Jackdaw (2018) that dove even deeper into an unbound, contemplative and swirling vision that has garnered praise locally and nationally. With celebrated features via KEXP including their single 'Stranger' as Song of the Day and a Music That Matters podcast feature, the band have also been featured via Comeherefloyd, Respect My Region and more. 2019 saw the release of their driving single Myopia, an instant classic full of glistening synths and shimmering guitars that further solidify the bands sound.
With festival spots at Freakout Fest, Freeze Fest, Look Up Fest, and a west coast tour under their belts, Peyote Ugly continue to expand their reach with a new full length album titled ‘Double Vision’ set to release in September 2022."
