"she was talking like she never surrenders, shit talking in my face..."
There exists a teen rebellion stupid but guilty pleasure type of a movie called "Up The Academy" about these fuck offs in a fucked up military school. The 1980 movie is silly, was produced by Mad Magazine, was (I think) Ralph Macchio's first 'big' flick playing "Chooch Bambalazi" (no seriously) and, to this day, has a killer soundtrack featuring truly great indie rock, power pop-esque songs. The likes of Blondie (X-Offender), Cheeks (Coquette, Bony Moronie), Blow Up (Beat The Devil), Ian Hunter (We Gotta Get Out of Here), Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers (Road Runner), Blow Up (Kickin' Up a Fuss), Pat Banatar (We Live For Love) and more. NOT a bad song on the album and even early Sammy Hagar (Bad Reputation) feels exquisitely right in this collection.
I bring up this obscure movie soundtrack because as soon as I heard "Lucid Girl" by Portland's Andy Place and the Coolheads and from their current full length "In A Confusing Futuristic Bar" I felt that heady sort of gritty, garage, indie rock punk bottom sound from that same era. The chunky guitars, sandpaper bleeding vocals, throttling lead guitar work and cheap synths floating underneath while the bass and drums are going off. It is a raucous sound that screams that time but, hey, I guess it still exists today if you look hard enough.
