"Miles inside of the kid's head / A pagan statue sends to death a guru / For talk of modern cliches and ancient risque / Like "hide your bodies, naked apes..."
Other worldly, poetically intriguing, grand and dark, "Statue Says" by Florida art pop band The Tilt and from their current album "The Gospel" is a curious addictive piece of sonic art. From the dynamic aesthetic, from the nimble bass and guitar lines that cajole, from Sawyer Dobbs sort of 80's new wave, art punk drawl that (for me) feels set somewhere in between Danny Elfman (circa 1981) and Peter Murphy (circa 1984) to the overall sublime production that feels like dark cinema, to the mind blowing vocals that you don't need to decipher but may want to if you like to solve puzzles. I am somehow feeling an amalgam of artists like Oingo Boingo, Joy Division, Tomahawk, Pere Ubu and Antonin Artaud.
ON the album "Up the Gospel" - While "Statue Says" runs the gamut of post punk, post rock other songs on this diverse collection dip into even more experimental realms dipping into free form-esque jazz, ambient, shoegaze, post hardcore, funky dance wave and other genric blends. The Tilt freely collaborate with an outfit called The Orchestra. Step into the album with an open mind, step into the shape shifting brilliant panorama of "Water Street" which feels like tip toeing / running through a warped mirror carnival ride. OR sit back and enjoy the joy and drunken pleasures of "Can of Dried Worms" that might feel like a psychedelic upside down midnight French experimental film (getting Oingo Boingo chills on this one). The last song "Sixty Four Houses" that references the first song, the title track, "Up the Gospel", is full of diversionary tactile tactics that pull your emotions in a dozen high directions while the plucky bass lines anchor you in your seat. To me there are wonderful, (fucking wonderful) ghosts of David Bowie, nods to early Talking Heads and others. It is a brilliant finale to a stunning, surprising album.

The Tilt is an avant-pop band from Southwest Florida with an ever-expanding style and palette. The Tilt was formed in 2018 by vocalist/drummer William Gensmer, bassist Taylor Panico, and vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Zeta Io, and joined by vocalist/guitarist Sawyer Dobbs in 2019. Often joined by friends comprising the Orchestra, the quartet's flexible sound encompasses everything from jazz, punk/hardcore, pop, dance, and more. After releasing various singles and bringing an unpredictable and energetic live show to stages across Florida, The Tilt is released their debut album, Up the Gospel, on August 5th, 2022.
