"If your knees are weak / And you're cold in the summer / Just some kind of freak / Alright, alright / Well, I couldn't be honest / If I could tell you I might..."
The somber reflections of 'Summer Fang' by Waterloo, Ontario's Death Party Playground is the kind of piano ballad that somehow makes you feel terribly sad but also hopeful. While it feels sparse at first with just piano and Kyle Taylor's vocals, an embracing deluge of bass, drums and guitars fall into place soon but what might give you chills is the added heavy cascade of string sounds, busier drums and electric guitar embellishments which at one point sounds like a repetitive circular g to gb and then b to g resolute pattern (or something like that) as the vocal refrain, "Maybe that's why / We stay up all night / Maybe that's why / We stay up all night...".
I love hooky guitar notes that simply repeat against changing chord shapes. It feels sort of Joey Santiago (Pixies) and done in the right way (as done here) feels utterly brilliant. The song amps up the outro with emotional layers of falling horns. The song doesn't seem to offer any cosmic reasons for emotional pain except that we all have it, it is universal, part of the human condition and somehow that can give us all comfort.
