"I want to know if you'll still love me if I change my name..."
Listening to the straight forward in your face declarations and questions of 'Passing' by Washington, D.C. based folk indie singer songwriter Jacob Bennett and you can feel the angst, pain, coarseness coating the strident vocal wail. The song from his latest acoustic album, "Heathen," (2022) explores "gender identity, lost friendships, and weird art films." Knowing the thrust of the song / album gives the song a heavier weighted gravitas but at it's core (to me) it deeply relates to all of us and wanting acceptance from those who purport to love us.
I am loving the stark approach, the kind of busker punk aesthetic and two fisted vocal aesthetic. It makes me think of the iconic "This machine kills fascists" emblazoned on Woody Guthrie's guitar in the 40's and how one singer and one guitar can make a difference. I think that the single man or woman with a guitar acoustically drawn is a powerful image and sound. It always has been.
