"I was just killing time and you took me by surprise..."
I had two penetrating thoughts while listening, floating in 'Two Figures by a River' by Chicago's Midwestern Dirt. Firstly, that life is so goddamn short and, secondly, that most of the time we are not really living in it but languishing in it (killing time as the saying goes). For me, someone who can be obsessive, that can only function as an added stressor making me feel I am never doing enough at any given moment.
You might feel other things as this track runs through it's paces. The shapes are proggy / sparkly indie rock in nature that feels nostalgic infused with soft and hard edges. The dense guitar sounds with such lovely airy atmospheres feel like jangle pop / folk indie / chamber pop / art rock and even a wee bit of twee all colliding together. Multi-layered and complex but not sounding overly so I feel an amalgam of 80's / 90's artists like Guided by Voices, Pavement, Half Japanese, Toad the Wet Sprocket and the Cranberries.
Press notey stuff reveal:
"Two Figures by a River" that "It’s a song about trying to enjoy life while you’re living it, not numbing yourself to the background of negativity we all face."
