"Caged by the darkness / Enlighten my soul / I think but it's all told / I am not alone / When the words fly the meaning grows old / Still I don't know / Still I don't know"
Step into "Kakistocracy" (“rule of the villains”) by Manchester 4-Piece post punkian psych-jazz fused Maruja and you might feel different things. Depending on what course your life has taken or what has happened to you during your life, the abject intensity, the sonic barrage might be triggering, it might feel like sheer power and rage or violence. So be warned.
From the band's debut EP "Knocknarea", vocalist and guitarist Harry Wilkinson, drummer Jacob Hayes, bassist Matt Buonaccorsi and saxophonist Joe Carroll give us a sound that exists somewhere between emotional bloodletting and exquisitely crafted darkness. That darkness coalesced with spit and fury and sweat and tears extends to the powerful poetry of the lyrics.
"It was your lies
That bought time
A battle cry
Until the love dies
With your trade deals
New hospitals
And its more lies
I got more lies
Now I can't see
And i cant breathe
Cos of your lies
Cos of your lies"
That bought time
A battle cry
Until the love dies
With your trade deals
New hospitals
And its more lies
I got more lies
Now I can't see
And i cant breathe
Cos of your lies
Cos of your lies"
Life is hard and for the empathetic among us. The pain in the world seen and felt as an observer can slowly kill you. The rage can be eased though by doing the right thing, by getting involved in the good fight in which any way you choose, from voting to charitable works to spreading the words of hope and also shining a spotlight on the hate mongers dressed in nice clothes. It also helps to feel the rage in all kinds of art so you can feel it, swallow it and gain the nourishment to move on.
