"you know that love will break you / if you don't break it first my friend..."
The crunchy, pummeling sonics, the declamatory wail, and the inherent subversions of "Ninjas Don't Cry - 2023" by Bedford, UK's Gaylips, is not only fun but feels like an adrenaline rush. For me, that amped up feeling comes from the warbled guitar sound, those amazing vox (and background vox), the radical drum beats and all the off-kilter tensions from the resulting collision of all these parts. I thought a wee bit of Modest Mouse or a more punk version of Wolf Parade colliding with a band like Buzzcocks.
I also thought of the Cure only because I imagine that "Ninjas Don't Cry- 2023" might be about those "Boys don't cry", um, after they grew up and became Ninjas of course.
Oh, the 2023 is because this track is a sort of reimagined version of the 2020 track, "Ninjas Don't Cry" from Gaylips' "Fuck the plan ,Sell the man." album, that track feel a bit more lo-fi but equally interesting.
