"Someday, when I go away, you’ll remain / Let someone else, fill those arms, so soft and strong / Like I used to, like I used to..."
The glowing bloom of "Apartment 4" by Victoria, British Columbia based artist Jaya Bremer has so many sonic tentacles, comprised of different genre seeds, each one turning your head. There are the surreal synth textures some feeling, futuristic or alien and some feeling dreamily vintage in some way, a blend of baroque pop, alt pop, indie rock. I also love the guitar sound and notes that have a sort of 60's country western noir tone. Cut against powerful and powerfully cool bass and beat drives, Jaya's vocal countenance is lush, yet intimately embracing, a cool elegant hug when things are falling down around you. Love her voice here.
"I won’t forget you, don’t forget me, too
Cause I want to live, in those sweet memories,
As long as I can, as long as I can
What kind of legacy will I leave
What kind of legacy will I leave
What kind of legacy will I leave
Behind, behind, behind, me"
Cause I want to live, in those sweet memories,
As long as I can, as long as I can
What kind of legacy will I leave
What kind of legacy will I leave
What kind of legacy will I leave
Behind, behind, behind, me"
"Apartment 4" feels grand, even fable-esque, a cinematic imagining that bends the rules of space and time.
From Liner Notes (bracketed):
About "Apartment 4":
[From the first few lines of the song, wrapped in warm and gleaming pad layers, one might automatically assume “Apartment 4” to be a bittersweet breakup track (and technically could be categorized as just that)...but there’s a little more to the story. Bremer shares:
"I went through a long drawn out reno-viction and was forced to leave an apartment that I had lived in and loved for four years. I wrote this song on my last night there, as a love letter and a goodbye. I wrote the song to the apartment as though it were a living being, which in a way, my grief around the loss of it felt akin to. I felt acutely aware that it was the end of an era, and I was already mourning it. It’s a tribute to an apartment that felt like a living entity."
The track features Bremer on synth and vocals, Chris Neal on synth, Austin Tufts on drums, and Wise Child bandmate Roger Eldridge on guitar.]

Jaya Bremer has been singing since before she had front teeth and that’s no exaggeration (which she didn’t have until 4th grade, but that’s probably a different story).
Bremer completed a certificate in Jazz studies at Victoria Music Conservatory in 2015, and from there launched herself head first into the Victoria music scene performing as much as possible and in a variety of groups and genres.
Over the last few years Bremer has increasingly focused on original projects- Wise Child and her self-titled solo project. In 2018, Bremer was selected to partake in Banff Centre Singer Songwriter residency, which was the final push to pursue her solo career, and record a selection of songs written over the last few years.
Bremer recorded her debut solo album Everybody’s Getting Married at Infinity Studios in Victoria, BC with Chicago’s Damian Wiseman, due out September 25, 2020.
Bremer's sound is melancholic yet quirky, touching yet dissonant, refreshing and familiar. It’s going to grow on you.
