"And the colours rain again / My God has a boundless plain / But I never believed a thing!"
The unbelievable sonic journey of "Via Coober Pedy" by Naarm/Melbourne, Australia's progressive leaning / abstractions eating Dopplerhaus, in terms of musical interplay, unfettered jam aesthetic and enthralling cinematic sweep, is one of the best songs I have covered in the 14 years I have curated this indie blog. There is, in fact, so much going on here during the 6 minute and 53 second time span that it is clearly one of those songs that words will not do justice. It is one of those artful creations that have to be experienced with closed cup headphones or well balanced speakers turned up to a potent level deserving of the post rock meets post punk that Dopplerhaus crafts.
At the atomic heart of "Via Coober Pedy" is the runaway breathlessness of the pace and the way the individual instruments manage to stand out despite all that is going on. Kudos to whomever produced and lovingly engineered, recorded this track. The song is furious in scope, the players all do masterful jobs attacking their individual parts and within every second of sound you can (in your mind's eye) gaze at each player and concentrate /experience their performance. There is a tendency for alt rock / psychedelic rock / post punk bands to amp up distortion levels (and even double tracking) in order to amp up the heaviness and as absolutely powerful as that is, sometimes this scorched earth approach tends to obscure as much as it enhances. Dopplerhaus, here, takes an approach of keeping the punch but keeping a lot of the clarity. The dynamic range and stereo spread of the track is absolutely on point as well.
LINER NOTES reveal:
[Conceived in a decommissioned railway station in Lyonville, Victoria; Via Coober Pedy is an only somewhat sarcastic look at the urban landscape and its insatiable desire for growth]
AND the lyrics, wonderfully delivered, offer poetry that puts you in a city with frayed ends.
"Cane toads with a matching mullet
Selling me some things
I saw them growing
Behind the gallery
Father built the brick facade
RIght above the old bar
I furnished with
Pink Floyd paraphernalia
And everything's in place
All my neighbours are in real estate
Searching for a clean slate
Look to the
Centre of Australia"
