"beautiful splashes of jazz piano, artful tumbling drum work all coalesce into something magical..."
The languid, moody sidewalk of "Does It Wear on Your Conscience?" by Sweden / Czechia artist Batty Fraud Clinic stands on moody, off kilter propositions against artful striations of jazz, fusion post rock, pop noir and electronica. The sonic reflections of sinewy upright bass lines, sultry sax ascensions (and falls), high pitched rings, beautiful splashes of jazz piano, artful tumbling drum work all coalesce into something magical, maybe a serendipitous love affair or better yet, a mysterious double crossing detective story. I am loving the narrative I am feeling, you, of course, may create your own.
LINER NOTES:
[Batty Fraud Clinic’s music might be described as Nu-Jazz, or Jazztronica with traces of traditional jazz, post rock, progressive, and electronica with some references to traditional Swedish folk music (and, of course, somewhere in the distant background looms Jan Johansson). But we do not put a lot of weight on these things. Putting things in boxes is not really our thing.]
[Batty Fraud Clinic works with rather simple songs, building from a traditional set-up of piano, upright bass and drums, but integrates synthesizers and sequencers to a fairly large degree, and every once in a while, we bring on a saxophone. Batty Fraud Clinic is not “jazzy” in the sense that we aim to showcase instrumental virtuosity or compositional complexity. If there’s complexity, it doesn’t have to sound complex. A 7/8 beat works best if does not sound like a 7/8 beat. One thing that is distinctive for Batty Fraud Clinic is the way a simple double bass comparatively often plays a central role in forming themes and melodies (without being highlighted as a solo instrument).]
Secretly, I hope that "Does It Wear on Your Conscience?" might grace a movie yet not made. That would be cool. This lovely track exists on Batty Fraud Clinic's full length album "simma".
