"do what you want with me..."
The industrial punk pummel, the dark inward passions, the migraine musculature, the caustic underbelly. There is a lot going on within the soul rattling "Body Song" by West Virginia's experimental rock /jazz punk quartet Auric Echoes. So much, in fact, that the song, or rather, different aspects of the song had my mind thinking of artists as diverse as Death Grips, Blag Flag (circa 1984), NIN, Idles, James Chance and the Contortions, Black Midi and even Tomahawk. It is not that Auric Echoes is borrowing heavily from either band I mention here but that attitudinally, artistically maybe these West Virginian free thinkers are cut from the same sonic D.N.A. Genres like industrial punk, gothic rock, death metal, sludge and a term I coined a couple of years ago, feargach punk, are all figuratively pinned to my imaginary wall connected with red yarn like an FBI profiler looking for a serial killer. Yes, I watch too many fucking movies.
LINER NOTES share this about "Body Song":
[Taking inspiration from dark club, industrial, and house music, the band explores a more unsettling side of their sound. The vocals sound too close for comfort, with lyrics detailing themes of sexuality and bodily autonomy in an unnervingly biological way.]
One big thing that I appreciate about what Auric Echoes is doing here is that for a song that incorporates free wheeling distortions, the song is not all that noisy really. Compared to a lot of bands that swim in this kind of pool, there is, to me, actually a minimalistic sound. I can hear each component, each churning drum fill, every squealing guitar note. When ambient-esque electronic noise is used, other things drop out. There is space between things and I love that. Wonderfully though out or naturally improvised (whatever), you have the space or less so you can feel the more. Great track.
"Body Song", accompanied with a very cool Official Video is the 2nd single from Auric Echoes upcoming LP "Division for Human Ascension" dropping on July 12th, 2024.
