"We went out walking through the neighborhood last night / Still-smoking lawns refracting flying saucer light / It’s pretty messed up but I guess we’re used to it by now / Anyhow..."
Listening to the stellar, hyper art punk "The New Apocalyptic" by Fairfax, Virginia hybrid alt pop, nu punk duo Higher Selves Playdate and I feel giddy. Maybe because the song, in style, in spirit, in it's weirdo pacman on cocaine aesthetic (or something like that), made me think of 1978, of Long Beach punk aliens Suburban Lawns, of The Rezillos, of Devo, Kraftwerk and all the pioneers of absolutely abnormal music that stretches the boundaries of rock classicalism or broke through them all together after turning them inside out. (As an aside, one of my biggest 'oh fuck it' regrets is when my little band was supposed to open up for Suburban Lawns but the gig fell through)
The blistering kinetic energy of "The New Apocalyptic" vaguely made me think of Suburban Lawns' track Baby but it is, of course, it's own baby entirely most likely one that is filled with alien blood:
"Dream on, my little dreamlets
Breathe life into dreams, make them true
Don’t pretend that you’re speechless
We know you"
This track is full of lyrical gems:
"Anway the sky falls down
Anyway the ocean’s rising
They’re murdering the innocents
All we do is count the bodies
Time is always running out
Cure the things that make us all sick
Everybody’s dancing to
This trendy new apocalyptic"
Before your mind sputters out- check out the LINER NOTES about this song.
[Equal parts 1960s inspired dance craze, cataclysmic litany and revolutionary call to action, “The New Apocalyptic,” by Higher Selves Playdate, emerges as the quintessential soundtrack of what could very well be our final summer on Earth. Is it possible to send or receive a meaningful signal through the airwaves, to cut through the noise of the news, lies, work, bread and circuses that infect our everyday? Can we pull society back from the brink? Find the nearest dance floor! Follow the easy-to-learn steps! Show us your moves! Shake, shimmy, stomp and swivel to this high-voltage chaotic mayday from the futuristic suburbia of now.]
Higher Selves Playdate is Jessica Kallista and Steve Fitzpatrick.

Now while I suspect that some of this track is programmed, I would hope that someday I would see it performed live, with the scintillating bass line played absolutely live. Finally, just remember that while the thought of dying may feel incredibly sad, not living while being alive should be and is absolutely terrifying (when you think about it).
