"Feel the waves / Channel frequency / Summer silence / Nearly strangled me / Tiger burning / Tiger bright / I want to get out / Of my mind tonight..."
The metal ringing vice grip of "Terrible Zen Parable" by Nashville based hybrid garage rock band Zook, the project of songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Zach Tittel (with any necessary collaborators) wraps around you and depending on your acceptance of it's psychedelic pitch you might feel cleansed or you might feel spent like a wrung out towel. The industrial folk punk, meets shoegaze hallucinogenic, meets sludge pop, meets bohemian freak out could seem caustic but the sonic sandblast (on the other hand) can feel all encompassing like the quiet of a deprivation tank allowing your mind to go where it must go. And, after all, there are quiet moments, truly pretty moments here too. All in all, I thought of a crushing amalgam of The Normal, Flaming Lips, Beck, Ty Segall, Death from Above 1979 and John Lennon's ghost and that is not bad company to keep.
"I want to get out
Of my mind tonight
Believe I’m headed
For jam up ahead
Going down to
The river again
Crack away
‘Gainst the mountains side
Vein of lightning
Made the critters hide
Frog
jumps in
Splash
No answer
Thought
Begins there
Getting
Faster"

Nashville-based Freak Folk. L.L. Bean Rock.
Sewn undeniably within the Nashville psychedelic folk scene is local band Zook. The project is the spawn of modern day poet, Zach Tittel. From 2018’s “Garden Variety” to now, Tittel has been working closely with producer and long-time friend, Thomas Luminoso to release another full-length album. So far, the three singles released have brought promise of a record with wide variation and playful, songwriter appeal. The first single, “Marmalade,” mixes warbling synths with piano and patterned, interlocking guitar leads. Although “Marmalade” comes off as post-modern in the way of Avey Tare, “Evergreen,” feels more along the lines of Wilco or Yo La Tengo. The latest release, “Pimlico Racehorses,” also evokes the same sort of whimsy. Over the years, the lineup of collaborators has included many Nashville staple players. ~Ash Richter (Total Wife)
