"Don’t be tempted by the poison water / Don’t be taken by the brutal stream / Though you’re living in the night of slaughter /Your dawn is coming..."
The artful obsidian darkness of "The Show" by Minneapolis alt rock / post punk cast The Rope reveals itself with tentacles reaching out to darkwave, gothic rock and romance wave all at once, at least to me. The throttling bounce back of the tom tom beats, rumbling mid register bass lines, sultry guitar screams, airy vintage synth palette and Jesse Hagon's romantic, steely vocal howl transport you to 90's era post punk. While inhabiting their own uniqueness, their sonic ink splatter might cast Rorschach shapes that reflect memories of The Damned, Psychedelic Furs and Bauhaus. It is a lovely place to be and while post punk, gothic rock atmospheres has never left altogether, I feel like this sound is perched, is floating at the periphery of a comeback period. I think this genre and others and just fucking bands in general, as opposed to solo artists, will, in fact break through once again in 2025 / 2026.
"The Show" is the second single from the band's new album, "Nightbird", set to drop on October 4th, 2024. The Rope is Jesse Hagon (vocals), Mike Browning (guitar), Sam Richardson (bass), Ben Rickel (drums).
