"I saw your dog / It was inked into your skin / It comes and goes / Just like your empty room..."
The pushed polished bedroom pop shine of "Isn't It Funny" by Maripool, the moniker of Lisbon-born, London based songwriter Natasha Simões, slipped in my head (and heart) easily. There are many reasons why but the blended indie rock sound so anchored by these bright downbeats feels so 70's pristine pop-esque while at the same time, the saxual bottom heavy chorus, so exquisitely dark in comparison feels like 80's new wave meets 90's post punk. These musical atmospheres trading off one another as a framework for Simões unique and compelling vocal countenance is full of barbs and full bown hooks, sonically and emotionally. This may seem like a wide array of sonic impressions but I hear / feel bits and pieces of artists like Todd Rundgren (1972), Carole King (1971), The Motels (1982), Big Thief (2016), Florence and The Machine (2009) in terms of compositional awareness, in terms of attitudes both light and dark.
lyrics:
I saw your dog
It was inked into your skin
It comes and goes
Just like your empty room
I met your family
They were everything you told
Everyone was there
Except for you
And I still listen to it
I know your favourite song
But I try to shake it off
Pretend it’s all fine
And I know it’s silly
And I know it hurts me bad
And I know it’s silly
And I know it hurts me bad
It comes and goes
Just like your empty room
I met your family
They were everything you told
Everyone was there
Except for you
And I still listen to it
I know your favourite song
But I try to shake it off
Pretend it’s all fine
And I know it’s silly
And I know it hurts me bad
And I know it’s silly
And I know it hurts me bad
"Isn't It Funny" is from Maripool's latest EP 'a day that feels like nothing at all' - oh and kudos to Josh Evans-Jesra for his truly evocative sax work.
