"hang me up / on the clothesline / drip me off / I've got the time..."
The sort of 80's lathered basement barrage rock of "I'm So Wet" by Richmond, Virginia garage rockers Strawberry Moon feels like such a purely wrought iteration of the kind of spit and fire punk rock that you would associate with mid 70's CBGBs in New York's East Village. A time when rock and punk were less clearly defined and Seymour Stein hadn't yet coined the genre new wave (as a marketing ploy).
The sheer, tightly wound power that Strawberry Moon mines, somewhere between early Blondie and early Iggy Pop & the Stooges or in between Sheer Mag and Mannequin Pussy, speaks to blues rock, detroit rock, smashed with a punk hammer. Propelled by the absolutely powerhouse wail of lead vocalist Katie Bowles along with bandmates Liam McElroy, Gray Stephenson, Christian Noonan and TJ Meade, SM produce a sound that feels purely ID to me. Exquisitely raw heavy rock that seems born out of instant improvisations by artists who can read each other minds or predict each other lines like an old married couple.
If you love "I'm So Wet", you will have to check out their 2022 album "Habitual Creatures" and last year's EP "My Offering"!! You will not be disappointed.

Strawberry Moon is first and foremost just a little bit of sweet ass garage rock from Richmond, VA.
Dynamic and thoughtful, they straddle the line between fuzz and groove, croon and scream, sweet and sour. The full five piece band, made up of Katie Bowles, Liam McElroy, Gray Stephenson, Christian Noonan and TJ Meade, formed in 2019 and released their premiere album Habitual Creatures in October, 2022. Creatures went on to receive some sweet local attention and was nominated for the Newlin Music Prize. Strawberry Moon also received 2nd place in the RVA Mag Readers Choice poll for “Best Local Band”.
“Riding the high off Habitual Creatures, the excellent album they released in 2022 - and if you’ve heard it, you know why. The noisy guitars, stompy uptempo structures, and bandleader Katie Bowles’ always brilliant and incisive lyrics make Strawberry Moon a must-listen - not to mention their live prowess, which has been widely heralded” - The Auricular
Since then, Smoon opened up for Sheer Mag, one of their biggest influences. They released two new songs this summer: Down in the Dirt and It’s Not About Me.
Smoon had their first east coast tour in September, 2023.
