"Knowing he could take it away / Live another episode of a day / Moving out your head now / Honest with yourself now / Waiting for a moment to sink..."
The emotional hard leans and drifts of "CANNONBALL", by Gambia born, Minneapolis based Papa Mbye, tug at you hard while the song's evocative soundscape swirls around you like a cascade of images strung together. I especially find the electric guitar shapes and dynamic propulsions exquisite in the way they literally dance, break and pop, rush and sustain, hang and dip. Other musical elements like the gritty drones of sound, the throttling bass, ambient talking, and the sense subtle beat structure that seem to exist only by guitar slaps and the percussion of the playing itself (stunning). The improvisational sense as a framework for Papa Mbye's smooth vocal countenance that, at times, feels like stream of consciousness and at other times feels like the gentle exorcism of pain demons is pitch perfect in tone, texture and emotional depth.
LINER NOTES:
‘CANNONBALL’ showcases papa mbye’s most vulnerable side with emotive vocals over delicate guitar riffs. Crafted during the early hours of the morning in a quiet moment of solitude, the song emerged organically as a deeply personal reflection on mortality: loss, grief, and acceptance. Its poignant lyrics invite listeners to embrace life’s impermanence and live fully. It’s a soulful journey of raw emotion and serves as a tribute to lost loved ones.
This song is produced by papa mbye and Caleb Wright (Hippo Campus, Samia, Miloe). The music video is directed by Sawyer Brice (KennyHoopla, Carlie Hanson, Ber).

‘CANNONBALL’ is the second single taken off Mybe’s new EP – "PARCELLES 16".
“I ended up flipping around that confusion and guilt into a conviction that I should be telling these stories, I wanted to make something for young immigrants who have all this baggage they’re trying to work through.”
After Papa returned to Minneapolis, he channeled that dissonance into an experimental sound that never settles in one box long enough to call any one genre home. Named after the address of his uncle’s house in Senegal, PARCELLES 16 is grandiose in its sonic ambition, intricately threading bits of hip hop, alt-rock, soul, electronic and new age African music. Yet it’s grounded in Papa’s raw and introspective songwriting, which is sweet to the ears but tugs on the heartstrings.
“One of my biggest fears was putting myself out there and being vulnerable, so on this I decided to lean into that fear and strip everything down to only what’s necessary.”

"CANNONBALL" stands as a reflective track especially for anyone who has lost someone recently, or ever for that matter.

Papa Mbye’s new EP PARCELLES 16 (out Aug 23) came out of a trip to Senegal and The Gambia, the latter of which is the country where he was born. While there for a family member’s funeral, he experienced a layer of grief common to the immigrant experience. A certain sadness for roads not traveled and paths not taken. He went to his origins looking for answers, but came back with more questions. If he never moved, would he still be making art? Was trying to be an artist as an immigrant in America wasting a precious opportunity? “I ended up flipping around that confusion and guilt into a conviction that I should be telling these stories,” said Papa. “I wanted to make something for young immigrants who have all this baggage they’re trying to work through,” he said.
