"I see you throwing tacks / In front of my tires / And throwing daggers / As i’m spinning strapped on a wheel..."
I fell in love with the tiptoeing darkly poetic beauty of "Looking Glass", by L.A. indie singer-songwriter / musician Sahara Grim, slowly, maybe the best way to fall in love. The potency of her sound here feels like an improvised dance, with long steps gathered and spinning in slow motion, only to rush and dart into dark shadows. As written by Grim and realized by producer Luke Temple aka Art Feynman, featuring artists Nailah Hunter & Lionmilk, the song feels lush but not over produced, demure at times even aloof but always sophisticated in its approach. A sound perfect for Grim's evocative vocal countenance that doesn't not act any part but just is plain captivating.
The atmosphere, the sensory flavor has hints of baroque pop, jazz, orchestral art rock and psychedelic folk and while not easy to define I am feeling an amalgam of the abstract emo haze of Skullcrusher and Alexandra Savior with the sad jazz textures of Helen Merrill (circa 1955). Stunning any way you want to define it, to perceive it.
LINER NOTES:
Looking Glass, written by Sahara Grim, is produced by Luke Temple aka Art Feynman featuring artists Nailah Hunter & Lionmilk. It is a rather personal song on betrayal, reflection & redirection told through a poetic lens inspired by fantasy stories such as Snow White and Alice in Wonderland. Looking Glass was written in response to friendships gone wrong and ultimately having to let go of them, as well as the past. Looking Glass is symbolic of how we are all reflections of each other and how we can determine which mirrors we look into. The songs emotions are played out through heavy guitars, colorful piano chords and harp dancing between lyrics.
