"Sideways eyes / Saying nothing / Obscure in the light / Hiding something..."
The abstract new wave frolic and art rock dynamism of "Photo Real" by Marvelle Oaks, the inspired experimental pop rock outfit of singer songwriter / guitarist Alex Demir and wife in crime, Tess on bass / vocals, isn't easy to describe in terms of current artists (at least for me) but the sideways leanings, the fun meets subversive atmospheres has me going back to late 70's experimentalism and early 80's new wave / proto punk. I feel the kind of wonderment and ID splattered sounds of late 70's British new wave meets art rock like Fish Turned Human or the amazing and utterly underrated Bruce Woolley and the Camera Club (I still think I might have a cassette of the band's "English Garden" album that had the very first version of 'Video Killed the Radio Star' before the Buggles).
I really dig the sonics on this track, the bass play and it's oppositional feeling against the sometimes sparse and sometimes dense (maybe stacked guitars) that teeter on complete dissonance in the most artful ways. Also like the architecture of the song and the wild eyed vocal
styles.
"Photo Real" is the second single off of Marvelle Oaks' upcoming LP "Fuzzzo".
LINER NOTES:
[The jagged riff, pulsating drums, and dark bass line are a rockified drum&bass foundation for the vocals of Photo Real. The lyrics are musings on how our eyes can speak: casting a side eye, sideways eyes, downcast eyes. The ways we see. We see: ourselves, others, ourselves reflected by others/in others. The mind's eye that can lead us to obsession, possess us, drive us to change for better or for worse.
Screen stimulus distorts all of this and we can't stop looking, scanning, scrolling. Losing ourselves but possibly rediscovering ourselves in the process.]

THE FACTS AS WE KNOW THEM

Marvelle Oaks started as the moniker for the music of songwriter and guitarist Alex Demir(formerly brownbelt singer/guitarist). Marvelle Oaks, the band, formed when Alex and wife Tess (bass/vocals) joined forces. Collaboration quickly grew from, "Hey can you play this beat ..." and "just do a bass line something like this" to "Hey, we actually sound pretty good" to "Shit! we have a show. We better get our shit together" to "let's make records".
We are Vocals, Bass, Guitar, and Drums.
We are Indie rock.
We are in love.
