"I’ve been drinking from the ocean / I’ve been thinking of back when / But all that thinking’s dehydrating / This is now and that was then..."
The indie rock fused carnival fire and slow motion melancholia of "Seawater", by Melbourne's adventurous GLOB, as the title track from their debut album, is a fervent blast of rock indie power pop with jammy, progressive predilections. I love the exasperated passionate vocals that move from hushes to powerful wails, I love the time sig swaps, the dips into dreamy melancholia, the use of keys that feel like early 80's new wave, the propulsive stair stepping guitar lines, the vintage plunges, transmissions from other times, hints of magnetic tape Mellotrons and the crushing pain of youth and beyond. I love everything about this track.
"Do you remember then
When the world seemed at its end
We revelled in the crowd
Like we were indifferent
And we felt like kin again
As the chemicals kicked in
We’ve long since come down now
Still I can’t forget..."
This may very well be such a diverse list but as I listened to this stunning sound I thought of everyone from Boom Town Rats, Cold War Kids, Franz Ferdinand, Bears In Trees, Tokyo Police Club and, to me, that is so lovely.
LINER NOTES (bracketed):
[Inspired by a quote from Steve Toltz dystopian fiction novel ‘Here goes nothing’ (“Visiting the past because you’re nostalgic is like drinking sea water when you’re dying of thirst. It’ll only make you thirstier. And it’s gross.”) ‘Seawater’ removes the rose-tinted glasses through which we often view the past, reminding us with its wailing refrain that “this is now, and that was then…”
Awash with warped guitars, sunshiny omnichord, a thundering rhythm section and a twinkling celeste lead line reminiscent of Saint-Saëns ‘Aquarium’, ‘Seawater’ submerges the listener into a sonic ocean of yearning and introspection before returning them to the surface by the song’s end with a fresh air of closure and contentment.
Produced by Michael Badger (King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Amyl and the Sniffers) and mastered by Leon Zervos, ‘Seawater’ is GLOB’s sixth release.]

Having only made their debut in 2022 and with an ABC Rage ‘Wild One’ featured video, plays on Triple J’s ‘Home and Hosed’ and ‘2023 with Richard Kingsmill’ programs and a support slot on Japanese rock ’n’ roll royalty Guitar Wolf’s sellout 2023 Australian & NZ tour under their rapidly expanding belt, GLOB have wasted no time in making their presence felt with no signs of slowing in 2024.
Locked in due to the pandemic during the bitter Melbourne winter of 2020, high school sweethearts Thomas James and Lily Sawenko bunkered down and found solace in what had always soothed them, music, nature and animation.
It was the latter love that inspired what would become their new musical identity, GLOB, named after the four-faced deity from Mars in Adventure Time, Grob Gob Glob Grod. Energised by the prospect of a new musical project, the still, quiet days of the lockdown saw Thomas and Lily tinkering away at demos of new songs with a fervour and productivity like never before.
Following the easing of lockdown restrictions, the demos were brought to producer Michael Badger (King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Amyl and The Sniffers) where recording for what would ultimately become GLOB’s debut LP began in earnest.
2024 will see the release of subsequent singles from GLOB with a full-length LP to follow.
