"Above the clouds above the sky / Office hundred/many stories high / it’s a booster seat / never helps you see..."
The simmering sadness, brewing regret, ceiling stares of "Double Blind" by Austin, Texas born tinvis, the musical incarnation of California stationed Joel Daniel, is compelling in it's sparse melancholia, dark reclusive nature built on upfront vocals telling personal stories. I am digging the sort of non-descript piano bar feel. The track build around piano, bass, drums and Daniel's introspective vocal countenance, opens up like a sonic flower the longer it goes on, with wistfully wonky synth sounds that feel like a magnetic tape loop mellotron, wonderful ambient sounds, and droning orchestrations.
Apart from the stunning melancholy structures, it is Daniel's voice that draws you in. I wouldn't call his sound aloof though it is (a bit) but maybe emotionally pitched down as if a hard hitting sadness has changed every cell in his being, at least temporarily.
"I know I let you leave
Why did I let you leave?
You were right there in front of me
Within a whisper’s reach"
LINER NOTES (bracketed):
[This is a sad song filled with authenticity. It is slow and deliberate in the way of Radiohead and Wilco, and the payoff/release comes intentionally in the bridge. It was written on guitar in a D Minor tuning—the saddest of all tunings…? and was then transposed down further. While the guitar is absent in this version, the darkness is there. It is about working too much (being a workaholic) and losing sight of what matters in life, relationships, and time. It is finite. It is the first song to be released off an album called Texnia, which features Max Hart (Tegan & Sara, We Are Scientists, The Staves) as the producer and includes Jon Natchez (War on Drugs, Beirut), Luke Reyolds (Guster, Neko Case Phosphorescent, Sharon Van Etten), and Eric Gardener (Tom Morello, Melissa Etheridge). Joel recorded vocals in Austin with Britton Beisenherz (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Marie/Lepanto, Will Johnson, Little Mazarn) of Ramble Creek Studio.]
Enjoy the Official Lyric Video for "Double Blind" and turn it up a bit. I always find You Tube videos to have a lower volume than Spotify.

tinvis was born of a move to Austin, Texas. Joel Daniel, a long-time resident of California who played in bands for many years with members of Tycho, An Angle, Best Move, and Dusty Brown, to name some, sought to write a collection of songs on his own with the hope of becoming a part of the long tradition of Texas music.
Inspired by everything from contemporary Bob Dylan and vintage Neil Young to Modest Mouse and Radiohead to the young female singer-songwriters that are leaving their mark in modern music: Phoebe Bridgers, Ex: Re, Flock of Dimes, Adrianne Lenker, and last but not least early Bon Iver and Centro-Matic, he wrote.
Joel tapped Max Hart (Tegan & Sara, We Are Scientists, The Staves) to produce the record. Together, they whittled 70+ tunes down to the final collection. Hart enlisted some stellar musicians, including Jon Natchez (War on Drugs, Beirut), Luke Reyolds (Guster, Neko Case Phosphorescent, Sharon Van Etten), and Eric Gardener (Tom Morello, Melissa Etheridge). Joel recorded vocals in Austin with Britton Beisenherz (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Marie/Lepanto, Will Johnson, Little Mazarn) of Ramble Creek Studio.
