"Hey, your name next to mine / Letters so divine / In 7th grade I lied / Cause I wanted you in my life..."
The memoric beauty, illusory or real, past or prescient of "Angel" by School Of X, the moniker of Copenhagen-based artist Rasmus Littauer and featuring the amazing Helena Gao, hits that special sweet spot every single time I listen to it. There is something about Littauer's voice against that dreamy guitar rhythm that absolutely draws you into the storytelling. Helena Gao gorgeous vocal countenance as a friend or foil is perfectly poised giving an added weight and wonder to the song. You want to somehow read between the dark and light lines of the lyrics. Whether secretive, like first loves (or second loves) or an open book that everyone in town now knows there is something that feels somewhere between magical or tragic. Whatever the seeds or the resulting blossomed memory, "Angel", feels like the start of an indie film, maybe a mystery about youth lost.

[“I’ve always strived to reach the seventh heaven. To be truly happy without any pain or worries. I understand more and more how life is like a scale that needs to be balanced. Gradually, I’ve come to believe the solution is to become better friends with the darkness, and in that way, let the light prevail. Maybe that’s the way to reach the seventh heaven”, says Rasmus Littauer, who has released music under the name School of X since 2017. Seventh Heaven now marks his third studio album.]
["Seventh Heaven", released via Tambourhinoceros (Lucky Lo, Brimheim, Rangleklods, etc.), is out now and can be listened to here.]
[The music video for “Angel,” directed by Danish visual artist and filmmaker Albert Hildebrand, captures Rasmus Littauer and Helena Gao in a melancholic setting as they embark on a car ride, which is filmed and layered with abstract and grainy visual effects. Albert Hildebrand explains:
"I almost always work with small crews and simple set-ups. It allows for experimentation and spontaneous ideas instead of forcing a strict schedule. It’s not just a technical task — it’s also a relational process."]

Based in Copenhagen, Rasmus Littauer is the artist behind critically acclaimed albums released under the name School of X. Here he has forged his own collective with a similar ethos, moving in the same circles as Mø, Noah Carter, Liss, and Yangze. With his three brothers, Rasmus Littauer has been part of the vibrant Copenhagen music scene, which has shaped him into the artist he is today. He has also toured Denmark and the world as a live drummer for MØ, The Minds of 99, and The Asteroids Galaxy Tour, bringing him to places like the Coachella Festival and the Sydney Opera House. Along the way, he found his own voice, which became the start of School of X.
And just as the Copenhagen-based experimental pop-art collective from the 1960s — from which he borrows his artist moniker — Rasmus Littauer continues to be on an uncompromising path to carve out his unique style of alternative pop with each of his releases. The hard work has not gone unnoticed, with School of X earning international acclaim for his powerful alternative pop imbued with a sense of melancholy, like NPR’s Stephen Thompson who noted how “Littauer's arty inspirations and aspirations don't drown out his pop sensibilities”.
On stage, Rasmus Littauer transforms the recordings into a dynamic performance oscillating between high-energy bursts and tender, intimate moments.
Meanwhile, Littauer has collaborated with artists like Liss, Trentemøller, MØ, Deb Never, Ana Perrote (Hinds), Spencer Zahn (Empress Of, Half Waif), Davide Rossi (Jon Hopkins, Gorillaz), among others.
