"I grew out of everything that I watched grow / All my flowers and my hours lined up in a row / And plenty of crows / turned to sparrows / and left this house / as melted snow..."
The indie rock reverence and bohemian beauty of "Ghost of a Tree", by Leeds feudal indie-rock quartet Green Gardens, grabs me by the collar and pulls me in close. I love the percussive rhythms, what sounds like banjo tones, the exuberant cadence / drum beat, the interweaving layers of guitars, the rolling bass lines and most especially the kind of communal singing that feels like it wants all who listen to join in and the pure poetry of the lyrics.
"And plenty of crows
turned to sparrowsand left this house
as melted snow
Breathing free
living meat
ghost of a tree
ghost of a tree
ghost of a tree"
The organic nature here with these curious words even pull me in closer. Maybe it is my love of all creatures and how they connect to us big human oafs. While I admit to not fully understanding the lyrics, "Ghost of a Tree" with it's inherent musical melancholia can, when in the right mood, nearly bring me to tears. Maybe it is because apart from the human suffering that we absorb through all forms of media, there are those creatures in the world who suffer silently.
Anyway, "Ghost of a Tree" is a perfect song, evocative and beautiful, that given time, might haunt you like it does me.

"If I could hold you like a wren
Like I wanted toI’d whisper and
say something
that covered you
embraced your lungs and said
I’m sorry
I murdered you
I had to
The dogs told me to
The dogs told me to"
