"Pen to paper / Rid me of my aching / Back to friends / Not ships in the night / You’re still a good guy / Rude awakening / A stillness I’m hating..."
The sonic hugs and hard push backs of "PTP", by Christchurch - New Zealand's Mim Jensen, stirs your senses and stimulates emotional cues while probably digging into your memory banks in impactful ways. The songs narrative and the way the everchanging production taps into your own past reflections / happenings / consequences of past yesterdays is masterful. The song feels like a bauble that a skilled hypnotist swings in front of you to take you back and that going back heals in some mysterious ways.
"PTP", an indie rocker with dark baroque pop elements, starts stripped down leaning subtly into 90's grunge tones and as layers build and blossom, the emotional core blossoms too and draws you into the track like an evocative indie movie. There are moments of glacial melancholia and more moments of introspection too. The musical break down / outro at around 2:40 is masterful. I love Mim's vocal countenance that holds weight in each phrasing.
Don’t hate me if I seem a little
Detached baby
I don’t want the longing or the
Midnight chasing
Don’t hate me if I seem a little
Detached baby
But if you need something
"I’ve been longing for a change of pace
But it's kicking me right in the faceDon’t hate me if I seem a little
Detached baby
I don’t want the longing or the
Midnight chasing
Don’t hate me if I seem a little
Detached baby
But if you need something
Then I’ll be here waiting"
"PTP" exists on Mim Jensen's sophomore EP "Shadow of the Gift".
LINER NOTES:
[Jensen’s sophomore EP “Shadow of the Gift” centres her in her healing era and is a symbol of her growth and journey as an artist and an individual. “Shadow of the Gift” takes you on a journey of introspection and longing. The EP title refers to shining light on the dark parts for the gift to reveal itself. A huge part of healing involves being brave enough to go to those dark places but the irony is that the darkness isn’t good or bad, it is simply parts yet to be welcomed with love. If you flip Shadow of the Gift, it reads Gift of the Shadow - a non-dualistic portrayal being the essence of this body of work.]
