"From the doors and windows out / Through the streets and far from town / The need to move, the need to run / The walls can't hold me for too long / There are more colors than there's time / More things to feel that you can find..."
The potent, artful electric tubularity of "Walls", by Portland’s hybrid alt rock quartet Risley, is compelling from the beginning to the end. Key for me to the magnetism of this track is the kinetic guitar sound that feel like distillations of British late 70's and 80's potency. Personally I feel the tubular guitar sound that Bill Nelson from Be Bop Deluxe manifested or the purely progressively drawn psychedelic rock guitar sound on Freefall by Camel's Andrew Latimer. I am an old dog and I am not suggesting that these two bands / artists, in particular, are part of Risley's inspirational palette, maybe it is more of great artistic minds thinking alike.
"Walls" is from the band's current 13 track full length "Umbra Penumbra" and also features Dave Abbruzzese (Pearl Jam) on drums. Apart from my absolute appreciation of the guitar sounds, the sheer potent musicality of the bass attacks and drumming keep the song, in it's totality as a hybrid of prog rock, bits of 70's seeded psychedelia, art rock and 90's post punk filtered through contemporary distillations of all of that. This is to say that you can hear, feel this as nostalgic while utterly fresh as well.
Going to end this piece with the second lyrical half of "Walls":
"Seduced by the past, longed for the cast
and drunk with the notion that anything lastsI'm not in control of much anymore
I'm not so in touch, like I was before
I know. That's how the story goes
Even so, I'd have to say...I'd rather break the mold
Let it sink in, without thinking
If love's so rare, let's just give it all
So, if there's a chance to take, we won't hesitate
All good things in time they say, as if it's fated
I've seen that film. I know how it ends
I'm not waiting
Even if it all means nothing...How you're gonna feel means something"

Portland’s Risley (Riz – Lee) is a four piece band that can be described as dreamy and nostalgic Indie Rock with a twist of 80s British influence. A web of interlaced dreamy guitar melodies often sit atop a driving rhythm section to stage the back drop for soaring vocals and thoughtful lyrics.
