"Quantify from one to ten the pain I feel / I’m here again / But I’d rather scratch the truth / If I’m paranoid I got no faith to lose..."
The ever blossoming and revealing chamber pop beauty of "See It All" by confessional singer songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Lizzy Dutton, and the title track of her debut album, gently sweeps you up in it's arms. Beginning with a swaying guitar progression that had me flash on one of my favorite The Sundays tracks as Dutton sings,
"Stick the camera up my nose and down my throat
I hope you see it all
Tell me that it will dissolve
I manifest smile of resolve"
Then the song starts to run even sprint with layers of swelling swings that feel like expulsions and inhalations of one's breath. The propulsives sounds are so well orchestrated but not overly produced which is much appreciated and lends to the magic. At around 3.15, wonderful classical-esque guitar and piano shapes dance as string intersect in beautifully dramatic ways, I thought of composer Maurice Ravel's work (and others). In total, such a mesmerizing trip, in every way.
LINER NOTES (bracketed):
[Regarding the single:
See It All was written about a psycho-somatic episode that became a turning point towards mental wellness for Lizzy Dutton. In an attempt to capture the episode sonically, See It All seamlessly weaves a robust Alice-in-Wonderland-esque violin, piano (Alek Barkats), and clarinet (Geoff Saba) instrumental break into the indie rock ballad. Surprising at times, and catchy at others, listeners may find the winding melodic choices to be playful and memorable.]
Falling down rabbit holes when you are not feeling well or when you body seems to be poking at your psyche in bad ways is crazy making. We have all spent hours on the internet during these times especially as we age. I relate to these particular lyrical passages:
"Pinch pot on my belly
Can you mold the clay so it holds me steady
A passenger in my own life is a cheap price to pay
To make sure I survive
Oh, well I think I’m going mad
I know there’s something there
There’s something there
I hope you see it all
I hope you see it all
I hope you see it all"
LINER NOTES (bracketed)
[Spanning across folk, indie rock, classical, and chamber pop, Lizzy Dutton’s debut full-length album, See It All, invites you into a universe that is decidedly multifarious. Recorded during a pivotal moment in Lizzy’s life when she took a break from the teaching profession, See It All’s impactful, yet understated lyrical content captures both the warmth of premature certainty and the sobering coolness of creeping doubts. Co-produced with Geoff Saba (Oakland, CA), "See It All" is at times woody with striking orchestral arrangements that adorn Lizzy’s acoustic-folk songwriting-style. In other moments, listeners are submerged into synth-laced passages that expand upon her previous sound. Collectively, the 13 tracks serve as a departure from Lizzy’s EP with an ambitious production that is as experimental as it is authentic.]
I have not yet delved into the album but hope to soon.

"The writing recalls the works of Nick Drake, while the piano part could be the ghost of Vince Guaraldi. Dutton adds her own rare touch to this intoxicating blend, conjuring the inspiration of Joni Mitchell without over embellishing that influence." - The Wild Is Calling
