"come to me for your amusement / come to me for doin' it / when it comes to sympathy / I don't think you should come to me..."
The jangly power pop truth telling and mild face slapping of “I’ll Be Bad to You" by Brooklyn's power pop / garage rock quartet Safe Houses, and from their upcoming EP "The Winter I Became Psychic", not only takes me back but gives me grand dreams that late 70's / 80's esque power pop distillations are not only firmly back but will invasively spread like crabgrass. A mere 20 seconds into the power punching sound of “I’ll Be Bad to You" had me flashing on Paramount, California's relatively short lived The Plimsouls and Tulsa, Oklahoma's 20 /20. Two bands that I would see in L.A. in what seems like two lives ago.
Safe Houses, while wonderfully acerbic, manage to not sound like a strict kitsch or retro band but, instead, pure and purely inspired by iconic sounds while adding their own level of subversions. Loving the dirty Farfisa-esque keys, the lead guitar swagger, progressive bass and drums swings and the vocal melodies / arrangement that feels like a punkified or garage rock version of the Beatles.

NYC powerpop/garage rock champs Safe Houses are back with a big, bright new music video and digital single, “I’ll Be Bad to You.” That trademark driving, jangling Safe Houses sound is all here – loud and clean guitars, buzzing keyboards, sparkling vocal harmonies, a kicking beat, and an ageless production style. Lyrically, “I’ll Be Bad to You” comes off as the deeply self-effacing confessions of a Bad Boyfriend™ – but one who knows you can do better, and who has high hopes for your chances.
