"If there was a room / that everyone who’s lost someone could go to / could it bring some order / to an all encompassing / Storm they’re gone / they’re never coming back / stay as long as it takes you to breathe the black..."
The beautiful grand attack of "Stroom", by Leeds feudal indie-rock quartet Green Gardens, feels like a special hybridization of grunge with chamber pop and emo, at least to me, and yes, I thought of Kurt Cobain and Elliot Smith in the same brain breath. Simple piano notes against anxious guitar strums, counter positioned layers of ambience and other instrumentations creating a tense framework for Jacob Cracknell's evocative vocals propped up with such lovely harmonies, and the lyrics, fuck... damn inviting, moving poetry to marvel in.
"and there’s magazines
and theres booksand there’s teabags
and everyone you really love is there
but no-one says a word
and no-one looks at you
and everyone's just there
And there’s a stack of home videos in the corner
next to a pile of photos that’s already been sorted
But you don’t have to look
You can burn them if you like
But in a few you’d see yourself
and your smile"
The song ends like an inhalation cut short. The brevity, to be honest, bothered me the first time I heard it but I am ok with it now. First and foremost, everything feels purposeful and moves, shifts your emotional state. The vocal melodies coursing through the voices are saturated with feelings and that's what it is all about, right? Especially because the world is so very fucked up.
"Stroom" exists, blossoms on Green Gardens' pastoral sophomore album ‘Thistlesifting’.
