"i saw it / and then it happened / we shake our hands goodbye / but then you tap the heart on my arm..."
The pounding, spiralling, beautiful messy dreaminess of "Stitch" by Berlin-based artist Snake Orange Cake, the transforming abstract project from Julia Carlsson, draws you into it's arms while maybe pushing you around off your feet. The percussive shuffling beats, the upfront right in your brain vocal draw, the layers of what feels like ID instrumentations / electronica and the sense that the song is speeding up ever so slowly into this mayhemic tension filled dance or fall is tantalizing. To me, the song sounds like a painter splattering a few swathes of pain on the wall, stepping back to hand paint on top of it in a sort of improvisational way. Just what I am guessing, feeling. Maybe I can Julia Carlsson's mindset in the future.
The lyrics, I find them interesting and as unfolding by Carlsson's vocal countenance in a sort of beat poetic spoken word way draws you into the storytelling. It feels filmic as she lets the musical bits expand and tell more of the story, a different personal narrative for each person who listens.
LYRICS
i saw it
and then it happened
we shake our hands goodbye
but then you tap the heart on my arm
covering my ears
my mouth
my eyes
i have no choice but to lean back
lean back into you
into rain+heavy clouds
into the off+season
into the unlived lives
skin and bones
i was naive and i was right
your shoulders were never meant to be this strong
let it go
let them fall
your shoulders were never meant to be this strong
fake forest
projections in the sky
black flags on the beach
a stitch in your back
fake forest
projections in the sky
black flags on the beach
a stitch in your back
fake forest
projections in the sky
black flags on the beach
a stitch in your back
fake forest
projections in the sky
black flags on the beach
a stitch in your back

Snake Orange Cake is the latest musical project by Berlin-based artist Julia Carlsson. Delving into the intersections of spoken word, experimental electronic soundscapes, and emotionally charged narrative, the project crafts immersive sonic experiences through the use of looper, sampler, synthesizer, and voice. Each composition unfolds as a layered, poetic landscape - tender yet dissonant, fractured yet intentional, holding space for quiet rebellion and introspective depth.
Carlsson's artistic foundation was laid through her earlier work as Leoblu, a project that garnered international recognition, including a song placement on a Netflix soundtrack, tours across South America, and performances in cities like Toronto, Berlin, and Stockholm. With Snake Orange Cake, she expands her creative vocabulary in a textural world where sound and story are inseparable. This new chapter invites listeners into a world that celebrates playfulness, vulnerability, and adventure.
