"The kamancha weaves a lyrical melody, as if to will a dream into reality before passing into mist, enveloped in distant ethereal voices and echoes."
Like sonic cultural landscapes interwoven to form a tapestry of many peoples throughout time, "A Dream of Lost Oceans" by Irish born, Rotterdam /Manchester /London based multi-instrumentalist, composer, writer in collaboration with Turkish born, Helsinki / Istanbul / London based instrumentalist, improviser / musician Melisa Yildirim both spin mysterious tales that feels at once ancient and bound by people yet born. My understanding is that Willson's primary instrument here is an oriental lute and Yildirim's instrument of choice is an anatolian kamancha, the lute plucked, the kamancha played with a bow not unlike a violin. These truly learned, accomplished women are true musicians, not a self taught guitarist and drummer like myself so it would be best if I do not dwell on their instruments of choice, I would be quickly underwater and drowning.
What I will say is that "A Dream of Lost Oceans" is the kind of filmic creation that I could find myself underwater and drowning in as well and loving every minute. There is no way to listen to this enchanted score and not see something in our mind's eye and feel something stirring inside. There is a sense of history, of creation itself and the serene state of nature as a Church before there where Churches. Lovely and haunting.
Willson shares this:
[A bittersweet dream: our parched earth refills with lost waters, which flow gently to lap between the coastlines. Could it happen? The kamancha weaves a lyrical melody, as if to will a dream into reality before passing into mist, enveloped in distant ethereal voices and echoes.]
So listen and dream or maybe even step into the void.
