"I couldn't help but tell you things I never told no one / I was infected by a spirit the first time we talked / now that I told you all my secrets / do you think I'm ugly? / I'll never tell you that a moment could deny your beauty..."
The indie rock sheen and emotional electronica of "Darkness", by alt indie rock outfit The Moss, got it's hooks in me easily and I am happily bleeding. Their propulsive sound, indie pop sophisticated and maybe seeded by a wide array of artists from different eras is so perfectly groove based while expressing a clear vocal view (goddamn to many bands are obscuring their vocals too much) is instantly fresh while feeling a bit nostalgic too. Besides the jubilant sonics, pearly drones of sound, sort of pop noir guitar lines, key to the pull is guitarist / primary writer Tyke James' vocal countenance that within an indie rock or abstract pop modality is unabashedly sort of old school rock with pop prowess. The Moss (at least based on this introduction) makes me think of bands like Supertramp, The Reign of Kindo, Deerhunter, Nation of Language, Future Islands and Alan Parsons Project. This list off the top of my scattered brain is diverse and multi-generational and whether I am hitting any nails on the head, I like the feeling that swells in my chest when I listen to "Darkness" which, by the way, is from the band's forthcoming EP.
About this track, the band shares:
"Darkness is written as this cyclical thought, of caring deeply about someone, but needing space from them to sort out your own emotions."
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
[Originating on the shores of Oahu as teenage buddies, Tyke James (vocals/guitar) and Addison Sharp (guitar) traded in beaches for the Great Salt Lake joining forces with Willie Fowler (drums) Caiden Jackson (bass) to form The Moss. As the group’s principal songwriter, Tyke channels his own personal experiences and passions into The Moss’ radiant and deceptively sunny tunes—their unique version of organic indie rock draws from artists like Pinegrove and Kevin Morby for sonic inspiration. The band’s insightful songs and memorable live shows have earned The Moss acclaim across the music press world, including Alternative Press, Under The Radar, The Alternative, LADYGUNN, Earmilk, Atwood Magazine and OnesToWatch. The band performed 50+ US headlining shows in 2025 and are performing with Mt. Joy in August. Recent festivals include BottleRock, Levitate, and more.]
Love this track and what I hope it might represent and that is a turn away from cookie cutter music. I urge you to check out The Moss and if you like them to support them with your attention and money in terms of purchasing their music and merch (if they have any). I also urge you to BOYCOTT SPOTIFY, they are the enemy.
